Jon Savage: I

Keep Playing That Cassette
One of the most influential bands in South African rock history, Cassette celebrate ian barker their success by putting their memories on big screen. Named after cassette-tapes, the band’s music has long outlived the tape-deck itself.
In 2007, the band won a SAMA for Best Rock Album (English) for their debut ‘Welcome Back to Earth’, ian barker which was only the beginning of a life-changing era for a band of four brothers who were in for a big surprise when it came down to music business.
Later ian barker that year, they set off on their first UK & European Tour in a super 8-seater van, true rock ‘n roll style. The band continued to tour the rest of the world, including Germany, ian barker Austria, Switzerland, Slovenia, France, Netherlands and Belgium, proving that South African music certainly had its appeal for international markets.
Jon Savage: I’m proud of is the fact that we were very focussed on the songwriting process. We became a really good songwriting machine over the years and everyone had lots of input in this department.
Also, ian barker we tried to think global a lot of the time which was a big reason for our successes and also part of the reason for our downfall. We wanted to work with the best people ian barker in the world, not just the best people in SA. We were always focussed on putting out an album or performing a live show that was aimed at the world, not just at SA.
John Barker: I was working as a director at Terraplane (production company). on Savage joined the company as a director a year later. ian barker We shared offices. I had an old 16mm bolex camera. I was looking for a reason to shoot some old film stock when Jon was starting rehearsals on Cassette’s second album. I went along to shoot the rehearsal and 5 years later we have a documentary.
I don’t think it’s resentment or bitterness between us, its just a bit of heartbreak. We were heartbroken that this band didn’t work out, so there’s quite a lot of pain there as we invested so much of our lives in to it.
Jon Savage: I’ve always been passionate about SA music, always very vocal and always involved. Getting ian barker my radio show on 5fm was definitely mostly attributed to Cassette, and getting on 5fm really helps with building my profile. But I’m trying to use my profile for good and not evil. I’m really trying to make a difference in the SA music industry and encourage bands to work harder, think smarter, be better!
Jon Savage: The biggest challenge was managing our own expectations. We were in the wrong head-space at the time. We were like bulldogs determined to “take over the world”, and to “break internationally” without understanding the reality of the music scene, or even going to poke around and see what the music industry is really like in the rest of the world. ian barker
We had some success and some failures, but our game-plan was too short and aggressive. Retrospectively, I have so much respect for the Parlotones international strategy which is slow and steady and one-foot-in-front-of-the other. If I’d been cleverer ian barker I would have been more patient.
About The Editor - Genevieve Vieira I have always had a deep passion for music, but with no musical ability whatsoever decided to use the skills that were home-grown and write about entertainment instead. Many would describe me as a junkie of photography and writing, always seeking to find beauty in the most mundane things. Born in the quiet City of Klerksdorp, I developed a passion for taking pictures and transforming the ordinary into beautiful stills.
